Remove Tempation – Reduce the Risk

‘Don’t give thieves a Merry Christmas’ is the warning being issued this week by the Chichester District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP).

Representatives of the CDRP will be in Chichester City Centre on Thursday 3 December between 5pm and 7pm, offering advice to late night shoppers on how to keep their purchases safe in the run up to Christmas.

Residents and visitors are asked to be vigilant around the security of their vehicles at this festive time of year – and encouraged to remain security conscious all year round.

The CDRP have produced leaflets aimed at the general public, older people and van drivers giving advice on how to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of car crime. Although relatively low in Chichester District, car crime remains a priority for the CDRP. The leaflets will be distributed across the district in libraries, Council Offices, Community Centres and retail outlets. Air fresheners reminding car owners to reduce the risk of crime will also be available while stocks last.

Sussex Police, Chichester District Commander Ali Darge says, “A range of operations are underway to tackle crime before it happens. By following simple advice residents can work with the Police and the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership to reduce incidents of car crime in their neighbourhood.”

In addition the CDRP are running the “Don’t give thieves a Merry Christmas campaign” again in retail outlets across the City. Shops will be given posters and stickers reminding customers to keep their purchases out of sight, to reduce the risk of having them stolen by thieves who prey on shoppers at this time of year.

Councillor Derek James, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety at Chichester District Council says, “We are fortunate in the Chichester District to live in an area with relatively low levels of crime. However, that does not mean people can afford to become complacent about car and home security, particularly at this time of year, when opportunist crime increases. I urge everyone to stay on their guard and enjoy a crime free Christmas!”
